The first computers were designed to be stylish and attractive. They also changed the world. With my retro-computing deskmat series, I will create artwork that celebrates both the beauty and the importance of many old computing systems.
Rama M60a with GMK Art on a Big Blue Deskmat
INTEREST CHECK FORM The PDP-1 computer is the first in this series. One of the first video games, Spacewar, was programmed for this system at MIT in 1962. Spacewar was shared throughout the computer programming community and ultimately inspired the game Asteroids.
The PDP-1 is a beautiful machine. The control panel, switches, & monitors all work together with a repurposed IBM Model-B typewriter to create an object worth admiring.
Thanks to MarkTheWeeb, ImperfectLink, Afresh, Ducks, ThickJimmy, & LP for all the help & encouragement! Special thanks to Cthulhupa for helping me sort out the technical manuals to get the lights & labels right on the panels. All the artwork was created by me in Adobe Illustrator. The render is also by me. As such I retain artist's copyright of all my work.
